Helping Students Stay Safe as They Gain Independence

Today's young people face challenges that previous generations rarely encountered. Rising concerns around violence against women and girls, knife crime, drink spiking, online exploitation, coercive behaviour and peer pressure mean that personal safety education has never been more important.

As children move into secondary school and beyond, they gain increasing independence. From Year 6 onwards, many begin travelling to school alone, spending more time with friends, using public transport and navigating the online world with less supervision. Developing strong situational awareness and personal safety skills during this stage can help them recognise risk, make informed decisions and seek help when needed.

Artemis Self Defence delivers engaging, evidence-informed workshops that equip students with the awareness, confidence and practical skills to stay safer in everyday life. Every session is tailored to the age, maturity and needs of the group, ensuring content is appropriate, relevant and engaging.

What We Teach (Skills That Actually Work)

  • 1. Situational Awareness & Threat Avoidance

Learn how to spot potential danger before it escalates, recognise high-risk people and environments, and make smarter decisions in real time. We teach practical awareness skills and our proven “Three Stupids Rule” a simple but powerful framework that helps you avoid unnecessary risk, stay in control of your choices, and keep yourself out of situations where violence is likely to occur.

  • 2. Simple, Effective Physical Skills for All Sizes & Strengths

    – Escapes & breakaways
    – Basic strikes
    – Control & disengagement
    – Anti-grab techniques
    – Knife awareness (non-contact)

All techniques are pressure-tested, easy to learn, and designed to help people escape safely.

  • 3. UK Legal Self-Defence Explained Simply

We break down what the law really allows, what “reasonable force” actually means, and how to protect yourself without putting your freedom at risk. You’ll learn when you are legally allowed to act, how to respond proportionately under pressure, and how to stay on the right side of the law while keeping yourself safe.

  • 4. Mindset, Confidence & De-Escalation

Learn how to stay calm under pressure, project confidence, and communicate clearly to defuse confrontation before it turns violent. We teach practical psychological and verbal skills that help you set boundaries, control the interaction, and create safe opportunities to disengage and escape without needing to fight.

  • 5. Drink Spiking Awareness

Learn how to protect yourself in bars, clubs, and social settings, including how to recognise and reduce the risk of drink spiking, unwanted attention, and predatory behaviour. We teach practical habits for safeguarding your drink, staying aware of your surroundings, looking out for friends, and getting out safely if something doesn’t feel right.
